Netflix UK Confirms Price Hikes Across All Plans

Following a cost increase in the US in January, Netflix UK has just announced that all plans will be getting a price hike which comes into effect immediately for new subscribers. Existing subscribers will be given 30 days’ notice via Netflix directly.

Here is how much the prices are changing by:

  • Basic Plan: Increasing from £5.99 per month to £6.99 per month
  • Standard Plan: Increasing from £9.99 per month to £10.99 per month
  • Premium Plan: Increasing from £13.99 per month to £15.99 per month

That marks an extra £1 per month for the Basic and Standard tiers and an extra £2 per month for the Premium tier, falling largely in line with the new American Netflix prices. This is the first time in 10 years that the Basic Netflix package has had a price increase.

Irish subscribers will also see price increases of €1 per month on the Basic plan, €2 per month on the Standard and €3 per month on the Premium.

With a commitment to spending $17 billion on content this year, new ventures such as the Netflix Tudum site and Netflix Games, and the streaming market growing ever more saturated, this move does not really come as a huge surprise.

A spokesperson for Netflix commented the following on the price change: “Our updated prices reflect the investment we have made in our service and catalogue and will allow us to continue making the series, documentaries and films our members love as well as investing in talent and the creative industry.”

However, it will not be welcome news to those in the UK who are also anticipating living costs to sky-rocket next month. Netflix doesn’t offer annual plans either, so sadly there isn’t a way to avoid the price hike by tying in with a longer plan.

If you’re an existing subscriber, then you can continue to enjoy Netflix until the company notifies you of the price change. Then, you can either stick with the new costs, change your plan, or cancel altogether.

You can see our breakdown of Netflix plans right here, which includes information on the quality of the streaming and the number of simultaneous streams, should you share Netflix with family and friends.

Alternatively, there are other streaming services out there that offer more competitive plans than Netflix right now, including Amazon Prime Video (£5.99 per month for a standalone video subscription and £7.99 per month for a full Prime account) and Disney+ (£7.99 per month).
